Knowledge and Wisdom

Knowledge and Wisdom went out to dinner together. Knowledge studied the map to find the shortest route to the restaurant. When he pulled into the parking lot, Wisdom was already there waiting for him. He said to him, “ I have driven to this restaurant many times in my long life and I have found that the shortest route is not always the fastest.”

When it was time to order, Knowledge was thinking of the restaurant review that he had read in the newspaper. Knowledge was disappointed, however, when the food finally arrived. It was different than what he was used to and it made him sick to his stomach. Wisdom’s meal was a heaping plate of delicious food. He shared some with Knowledge. “In all my long years,” Wisdom said, “I have learned which foods I like and which foods are good for me.”

After the meal Knowledge used a pencil to calculate fifteen percent of the bill on a napkin. He was surprised to look up and see that Wisdom had about the same amount of money already on the table for the waitress to pick up. “I have had enough experience in my long life to be able to estimate the appropriate tip.”

Knowledge was feeling depressed and his youthful enthusiasm was falling as they walked out to their cars. Wisdom seemed better prepared for every situation just because of his experiences. Wasn’t knowledge useful for anything?

Knowledge was about to leave when Wisdom called him over to his car. Wisdom said to him, “In my long life it has been my experience that when I have a problem I can’t solve myself, I look for someone who has the knowledge to help me.”

Knowledge responded, “That is the wise thing to do.”

“Can you help me fix my car?” asked Wisdom. “It won’t start.”

“I’d love to help you,” said Knowledge as he fetched his tools and repair manual from the trunk of his car.
